| How will BacoleƱos and Negrenses who have raised an outcry against the determination of the House of Representatives to constitute its members into an assembly and, by themselves, propose changes to the Philippine Constitution? Today they will have a chance to show how indignant they are over this blatant move of their so-called representatives to perpetuate an act that they fully know is against the will of the majority of their constituents. Today, they will be given an opportunity and a venue for making their sentiments known to their congressmen, as well as to the highest authority in the land, their objections to what is now known as the Con-Ass, which is the constituent assembly they wish to set up in order to make changes in the Constitution to suit their future political plans. For, of course, hardly any full-bloodied Filipino believes at this point that the changes they want to impose on us are simply motivated by the goodness of their hearts and truly intended for our benefit. There is too much in their pronouncements and their actions that do not jibe, for us to be taken in again. And so, it now behooves all of us who would like to put a stop to this trampling on our right to participate in any move to change our present charter, to come out today, or to remain silent, and suffer, perhaps, for our entire lifetime. This we can do by answering the call to join and be counted with our leaders in the civil society, the church, the business and industry sector, the academe, and all other segments of our community, by coming out and bolstering the numbers showing their protest and disagreement with the recent action of Congress. For how can we be sure that this group will not mangle our Constitution when they will not even abide by its provision to include its co-equal body, the Senate, in the move? We have participated and aired our sentiments in matters of lesser importance before. This is something so important and overpowering that no Filipino can afford to ignore.* VisayanDailyStar Editorial |
