Zayco Mum on Possible Marañon vs Coscolluela Showdown in 2010
6:29 PM
By Teresa Ellera-Dulla

Negros Occidental Governor Isidro Zayco was mum when asked for his comment about the possible showdown of Sagay City Mayor Alfredo Marañon Jr. versus former Governor, and now Sugar Regulatory Administrator Rafael “Lito” Coscolluela for Governor in 2010 elections.

Marañon already declared his candidacy for Governor of the province in 2010 under the banner of the United Negros Alliance (UNA).

Coscolluela, on the other hand, said he was keeping his options open on whether to run for governor in 2010 or not.

Coscolluela served as governor of the province for 3 terms or 9 years. Marañon, brother of the late Governor Joseph Marañon served also for 3 terms or 9 years as congressman of the 2nd district of the province.

After Kabankalan City Mayor Pedro Zayco told Governor Zayco of his inclination to run for Board Member representing the 6th district, Marañon said that Vice Governor Dino Yulo, San Carlos City Mayor Bong Lacson, Manapla Mayor Manolet Escalante and Board Member Gary Acuña are now among the choices of UNA as his possible running mate.

Zayco said that “we will just have to wait for the declaration of the possible candidates and his political decision in 2010. I may run for Governor,” he quipped.

Zayco is the Provincial chair Lakas-Kampi merged party. He was allied with Coscolluela before his alliance with UNA. His niece, the daughter of Mayor Zayco is the wife of Board Member Patrick Lacson, son of former Governor Daniel “Bitay” Lacson who is a known ally of Coscolluela.

Zayco said that his final political plans would be known when he delivers his State of the Province Address (SOPA) on September 16 during the regular session of the Provincial Board.*
